In the heart of Chicken Soup Factory, Liberia, West Africa, under the vast sky’s umbrella lie tales of young orphans, stories we must tell of kids who live with prayers as food for their daily lives. Their little feet scuttle on the burnt sandy terrain, with eyes shimmering, mirroring stories of hope. For some, their hopes are on us, longing each day for someone to save them just by holding their hands. They are beautiful kids with an innocence born pure in God’s vision, but despair sometimes creeps in at night, and dark thoughts fill their minds as many of them want to be hugged. A sense of love they wish for!
Yet within them, a fire and their spirit won’t wane. Dreams as vast as the plains, breaking every chain. Whispers of memories, of families once whole. Yet amidst the heartache, they are radiant souls. They seek kinship in stars, finding solace in the moon’s glow. They are warriors of resilience, more than we’ll ever know. They are called “the Great Commission.” These orphans rise, embodying beauty yet shadows of a harsh life, breathing hope into the air. With hands outstretched, they form a circle so tight together that they stand, ready to ignite the light.
These kids lack proper care; they need electricity at night, clothes to cover their bodies, safe and pure water is like another day’s hope, and food is a miracle on days when their caretakers do not sell plastic bags of coal. Yet, they say education is a right, but it is more of a privilege for them. They are wrapped in God’s palms as He makes a way every second of the day. Some look out the windows with no glass frames directly to the sky and consistently ask God, why? Why are they waking up to nightmares on hungry bellies, and when will the world’s teachers come to their aid to teach them the difference between reality and ABCs?
Yet! They believe in God. One thing their caretakers have is to help them by providing spiritual comfort and teaching them a sense of reassurance during challenging times. They are reminded of their sense of purpose, to have faith in God, and to be morally and ethically guided. They teach them forgiveness and redemption, especially for those who may carry emotional wounds from their past. They learn strength and resilience, helping them overcome challenges and persevere through difficult circumstances.
